Magic is as old as mankind and it is said that the first magical feat was born at the same instance as science itself. This occurred when man invented fire by striking two stones together which to the rest of his tribesmen seemed like magic. Since then man has always tried to create effects that contradict the laws of nature.
Most parts of the world had their own forms of magic. From witch doctors to shamans they boasted supernatural powers for wealth or fame. A lot of these practitioners were tortured and sometimes even burned to death for accusations of practicing witchcraft.
It was then that Reginald Scott wrote a book called "The Discovery Of Witchcraft" to eliminate the superstitions underlying the art of magic. It is supposed to be the first book ever written on the subject. People slowly came around to accepting magic as an art form.
With the turn of centuries came more modernistic practitioners like Robert Houdin who was named the father of modern magic. It was from Robert Houdin's name that Harry Houdini, the world's greatest escape artist, adopted his name with an 'i' added to mean 'like Houdin'. Houdini baffled the world with his ability to escape from any restraint thought of. He escaped from police regulation handcuffs, prison cells and straitjackets leaving even the formidable Scotland Yard police dumbfounded.
The 19th century saw an entire new breed of performers like Doug Henning, Howard Thurston and Harry Blackstone who introduced magic as a theatrical art.
Today magic has reached its zenith and is touching even greater heights with names like Paul Daniels, David Copperfield and Lance Burton to name some of the noteworthy that have redefined the art of stage magic.
The world of magic has evolved into a complex form of stage entertainment with technological advancements and is a million dollar industry. It captivates people from all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed or age.
In spite of the advancement of the media world and science, there will never be a machine that can take a coin out of its pocket and make it melt into thin air, at least not with the style and finesse of a magician. With the congestion of software permeating the air, people will turn back to live entertainment. Theater has come a full circle and born is an era of new age magic that will weave its spell on the masses.
The basic need of the human mind to imagine and dream has been given a physical form through the art of magic. A dying art has emerged to give you hope that miracles still happen and keep us heading towards some faint but luminous goal.
